The New York Niagara University
B.A.S.I.C. program visit (Brothers And Sisters In
Christ) took place this year during the week of March
29th - April 2nd, Holy Week. The entire week is spent
in service to the Arkansas community. On Monday,
students assisted our garden collaborator Charlie
Jackson, with the help of a St. Anne's parishioner Karl
Serbousek, in building a two-sectioned wooden compost
bin and repairing leaks in last year’s renovated shed.
Students hauled manure, dug holes, planted okra, and
built a scarecrow. Lunch was provided to the students
and workers. The day began with a blessing of the
gardens, by Fr. Tom Stehlik, CM, and a dedication to our
Blessed Virgin Mary with a statue placed nearby in her
honor.
Mary Wildgen, professional caterer,
member of Christ the King in Little Rock, and LC,
organized a grand meal for the entire occupancy (and
staff) of Christopher Homes that Wednesday with
preparation done entirely by Mary and the students. Fr.
Tom Stehlik and the students provided music as they
dined. Mary's idea of the LCs providing specialty
breads with personal notes made a big impact and the
time was enjoyed by all.
